| The
Sparrow and the Ocean is an educational story,
based on an ancient Indian folktale. Apart from the
vivid illustrations and rich vocabulary it helps the
child to develop important values, such as determination,
modesty, responsibility and help in need. |
|
It helps the child to imbibe the proper attitude
at times of difficulty, as shown by the main character
in the book.
The
Sparrow and the Ocean:
|
 |
Encourages
the child to undertake the difficult and seemingly
impossible challenges. |
 |
Communicates
to the child that anger is also sometimes welcomed,
if it's directed properly, and that it's good to make
one's stand. |
 |
Encourages
the child to persevere in attaining a desired goal
despite the opposition of his peers. |
 |
Is
also a great starting point for a discussion on feelings
(joy, fear, anger, sadness, being hurt). Is the child,
as the little sparrow, also sometimes angry, sad,
happy, hurt or afraid in certain circumstances? How
does the little sparrow cope with negative feelings?
How did she react when her peers mocked her? |
 |
Teaches
the child to learn to accept diversity and develop
cultural tolerance. |
 |
It
is an excellent starting point for a discussion on
modesty and responsibility. The sparrow was delaying
too long since no place seemed suitable for her nest.
Finally she carelessly made her nest on the ocean
shore and lost her eggs; at the end she became aware
of her mistakes and built her nest on the top of a
tree even though the place wasn't perfect. It communicates
to the child that he himself should also be content
with the given conditions even though they may not
be completely to his liking. |
